Project Report
About the Project
PARAMPARA is an open-source digital platform designed to make Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) easier to explore, understand and connect with contemporary life.
The project began with the observation that IKS is an extremely broad field containing knowledge across philosophy, literature, science, mathematics, arts, culture, traditions and other areas. Although information is available through many different sources, a beginner may find it difficult to know where to start or how different pieces of information connect.
PARAMPARA therefore aims to act as a digital gateway to IKS, rather than simply being another static information website.
Key Features
- Explore Indian Knowledge Systems
A structured and beginner-friendly way to discover different areas of IKS and understand the breadth of Indian knowledge traditions. - Trace an Idea
Users can explore an idea through different layers, beginning with its source and context and moving towards later interpretations, traditions and possible modern applications. - Verify a Claim
The platform is designed to help users examine claims associated with Indian texts and traditions by identifying their sources and distinguishing source material from later interpretations or popular claims. - IKS in Modern Contexts
PARAMPARA explores how ideas from traditional knowledge can be discussed in relation to modern situations while clearly distinguishing the original source from a modern interpretation. - Interactive and Multimedia Experience
The project uses interactive interfaces and can incorporate text, images, audio and video where they add meaningful context rather than using multimedia simply for decoration.
Core Idea
A central principle of PARAMPARA is:
SOURCE ≠ INTERPRETATION ≠ TRADITION ≠ MODERN APPLICATION
The project aims to make these distinctions visible so that users can explore traditional knowledge without automatically treating a modern interpretation, popular claim or AI-generated explanation as the original source.
Research & Development
The project is being developed through an ongoing research process. Initial research focused on understanding the scope of IKS, how it is currently communicated digitally, and how traditional knowledge is being connected with contemporary subjects.
This research led to the idea that modernization should not simply mean putting existing information into a modern-looking website. It should also improve how users discover information, understand context, interact with sources and relate concepts to contemporary situations. (Research papers could be found on the GitHub which could be access easily through about section of the site)
Open-Source Development
PARAMPARA is being developed as an open-source project. The aim is to make the project and its development process transparent and allow the project to continue evolving beyond the competition.
The current version is an early working build and is still undergoing refinement, including bug fixes, content improvements and further feature development.
Future Scope
Future development may include:
- Expansion into more areas of IKS
- Larger source and knowledge database
- More regional cultural traditions
- Improved source verification
- Multilingual support
- More interactive learning experiences
- Contributions and improvements from the open-source community
PARAMPARA is intended to grow from a competition project into a continuously developing digital learning and exploration platform.
It’s an open source project so I would welcome the open source contributors
